This project began with a call-out for young creatives from the African community and Diaspora and the vision to explore deep narratives, tracing colonial tropes and creating new knowledge in their stead.

During our weekly online sessions, we invited Black, African and Diaspora artists to share their practice and journey with us, and discussed the importance of creativity, activism and heritage. New artworks, narratives and understandings grew from these workshops which you can view here WORKSHOPS

But we also found new questions; what unites the creatives involved in this project? From Black Welsh to White African, Mixed Heritage, Third Culture Kid, Asylum Seeker to Butetown Native or British Ghanaian the identities we carry are individual and unique, and many of us know more than one sense of self. Hazel Ravu describes her hidden selves like an undercover agent, code-switching to fit in as the only Black girl in her school and neighbourhood.

There is no one Black or African identity. And yet, this cohort of artists know they carry these labels – it seems the luxury of ‘neutrality’ is reserved for white artists only.

To be a Black Artist can be a source of joy, as Gabin Kongolo’s performance My Skin Is My Logo proudly states. It can also be a reductive label and a source of conflict. Sean Suter’s poems question Where Do I Belong?

African creativity is not confined to Western labels and disciplines, it is multidimensional and cross-disciplinary. We have brought together poems and stories, performance, paintings, zines, photographs and graffiti for this online exhibition. Our artwork explores digital and physical spaces, from Instagram to the pub to football stands, reflecting on how we inhabit our bodies and environments.

Through the artworks we share with you, we are telling our stories, speaking of our struggles and experiences in a beautiful way, vibrant and powerful and in your face. We are not a monolythic people, but a movement, rich with global connections. We occupy multiple spaces, at the margins, at the centre and in-between. Some of our work will connect universally, some may challenge or confuse those who do not share our lived experiences.

Through this showcase we invite you to question hierarchies and labels. Our artworks reflect on where we come from, where we are, and where we want to go next. We share with you our points of view and our journeys.

Mradi huu ulianza kwa kuwaalika vijana wabunifu kutoka katika jumuiya ya Waafrika na Diaspora na lengo kwa kuangalia maelezo ya kina, kufuatilia tamathali za Ukoloni na kujenga maarifa mapya mahala pake.

Katika vipindi vyetu vya kila wiki kwa kutumia mtandao, tuliwaalika wasanii watu Weusi, Waafrika na Diaspora kushirikiana katika shughuli na kusafiri pamoja nasi, na kujadili umuhimu wa ubunifu, uanaharakati na urithi wao. Kazi mpya za kisanii, maelezo na uelewa ulijtokeza kutokana na warsha hizi, ambazo zinaweza kuonekana hapa. WORKSHOPS

Hata hivyo tulipata maswali mapya; ni kitu gani kiliunganisha ubunifu ulio kwenye mradi huu? Ubunifu wa Afrika hauko kwenye lebo za mataifa ya magharibi na masomo, ina pande nyingi na kuchanganya masomo mbalimbali. Tumeleta kwa pamoja mashairi na hadithi, maonyesho, picha za rangi, magazeti, picha na graffiti kwa ajili ya maonyesho ya mtandaoni. Kazi zetu za kisanii zinaangalia digitali na nafasi inayoonekana, kutoka kwenye Instagram hadi kwenye pub na viwanja vya mpira, ukiangalia jinsi tunavyotawala miili yetu na mazingira.

Kupitia kazi za kisanii, tunawashirikisha, tunawaambia hadithi zetu, tunazungumzia mapambano yetu na uzoefu kwa njia nzuri, iliyochangamaka na yenye nguvu usoni pako. Sisi siyo mnara mkubwa wa watu, lakini kwa sasa, ni matajiri kwa sababu ya muunganiko wa dunia. Tunamiliki nafasi nyingi, pembezoni, katikati na kati. Baadhi ya kazi zetu zitaungana pahala pote, nyingine zitawapa changamoto au kuwachanganya wale ambao hawana uzoefu wa maisha yetu.

Katika onyesho hili tunakukaribisha kuuliza mambo ya mfumo na lebo. Kazi zetu za usanii zinaelezea tumetoka wapi, tupo wapi, na baadae tunataka kwenda wapi . Tunawashirikisha mawazo yetu na safari zetu. Kama Charles Obiri-Yeboah alivyoandika katika maelezo ya kwanza:

Makanjuola

Abraham Makanjuola was born and raised in London with Nigerian and Sierra Leonean roots. Makanjuola studied Health Economics in Bangor with a focus on social prescribing. Passionate about changing narratives, Makanjuola explores how stereotypes of Africa and her people are perpetuated in the media and public consciousness, and what people say about Africa. Speech is part of a triumvirate that starts as what we think. What we think impacts what we do, and what we do becomes our reality. What our current reality is, is not right and so we must evaluate every level of this triumvirate.

We are all complicit and/or involved in what’s going on and we’ve got to evaluate and then change as appropriate. Those of us who are privileged (including members of the diaspora) must take a step back and listen to the people directly implicated to find out what they want and need and not what we think that they want and need.

Africa as a continent is greater than how it is treated.

Africa is greater than what we see.

Everybody has a part to play in Africa reaching its full potential.

It is important to speak to what we hope Africa will be and not as we currently see it.

Mujib Yahaya and Bethan Williams met and became creative collaborators at the Oasis One World Choir. Williams and Yahaya use music and dance to channel emotions about the injustices faced by Black people into positive action:

I want the future, where there is equity and equality, where Black people will be in intellectual spaces around the world.

Williams and Yahaya worked together on the sound scape and movement of this film.

Their work invites the audience to enter on a journey, to dispel myths and re-channel representation. William’s voice and Yahaya’s embodied movement personifies displaced individuals and their truth.

Based in London with Ghanaian heritage, Charles Yeboah explores the conflict in navigating different worlds. His series pilot Black Sheep explores a sense of otherness, while challenging conceptions of Blackness. Yeboah hopes to see more nuanced Black representation on screen and television and advocates for the right of Black people to just “exist”, without the pressure to be representatives for their entire race. Yeboah hopes people will feel seen in his work, understand his sense of humour or take interest in his story.

LIANDISHA

We Are The Future by Chembo Liandisha combines audio and performance to showcase the artist’s journey, deconstructing and decolonizing language as a signifier of cultural dominance and alignment.

The chant We are the future is layered with a multitude of voices and languages. Liandisha plays with themes of identity, culture and femininity, performing a conveyor belt of her identities in this modern post-colonial space. From blue jeans to Bantu knots and face paint this performance is a journey into her identities as a young Black woman.

Born in Zambia and raised in both Zambia and the UK. Liandiasha has performed at international festivals such as Lake of stars (Malawi), Focus Wales, Zamfest. She is a 2019 Horizons Awardee and Empawa 100 recipient. Chembo intends to continue creating more Performance Art films to explore culture, identity, spirituality and womanhood, as well as music as she continues to grow as an Artist in her chosen fields.

Kutoka katika vazi blue jeans hadi nguo za KiBantu na kupaka uso rangi maonyesho haya ni safari katika kujitambua kama mwanamke mweusi.

Alizaliwa Zambia na kukulia sehemu zote yaani Zambia na UK. Liandiasha amefanya tamasha katika maonyesho ya kimataifa kama Lake of stars (Malawi), Focus Wales, Zamfest. Na ni mtunukiwa wa Horizons Awardee and Empawa ya mwaka 2019 ambayo ilikuwa na watunukiwa 100. Chembo anategemea kuendelea kuandaa maonyesho zaidi ya usanii, filamu na kuangalia utamaduni, kujitambua, imani uanamke pamoja na muziki kadiri anavyoendelea kukua kama msanii katika maeneo aliyochagua.

Cynthia Sitei shot her images on 6x6 negative film, exploring spaces in Wales, England and South Korea as an African explorer. Her images speak about rites of passage, from her brother’s circumcision as a traditional passage from boyhood to manhood to the rite of passage in moving to and living in different spaces and cultures. Sitei sees photography as a way to relating to and connecting with her subjects and includes sound and conversation in her work. Her grandfather Mzee Umba Mwakisachi taught her to explore and preserve her culture, and she continues to research and reflect her heritage within her art, relationships and experiences.

Kongolo

Gabin Kongolo is a 22-year-old actor/poet from Cardiff. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests in June 2020 Kongolo wrote My Skin Is My Logo. Growing up in Wales where he was made to feel different, Kongolo has felt uncomfortable in his skin for a long time. This performance presents an awakening, with Kongolo growing to truly love his skin and who he is as a person. Kongolo’s performance is set within a traditional British pub, a setting where conversations about Black British experience could not be had openly and comfortably in the past. Speaking directly to the camera, Kongolo brings this conversation to viewers.

Gilbert Sabiti’s zine explores self-Identity investigating his Rwandan and British heritage and experiences growing up Black British. Sabiti’s artwork does not conform to one particular identity. Refusing to be restricted in his creative expression, Sabiti’s selection of media varies as curiosity is his driving force. Sabiti’s zine includes words by Ife Grillo who shares his lived experiences, their collaboration gives an intimate insight into experiences faced by Black British people, embracing liminal identities and opening up new ways of thinking.

Newell

In her triptych paintings, Hannah Newell explores what it means to be African or Welsh, or both. Working through her experiences in Malawi and Wales, Newell is interested in how cultural identity relates to contemporary issues faced by TCKs (Third Culture Kids). Newell also draws on the book Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga, in which she sees many of her experiences reflected.

The titles of Newell’s paintings use homophones; from T (Tea) to C (Sea) and K (‘kay) the paintings trace her journey as a TCK from Malawi to Wales. Struggling to adapt and reconnect to her sense of self, Newell has used art to overcome her eating disorder and explore her complex identity.

Hazel Ravu’s short story Borderline – black bubble reflects on her experience growing up as the only Black girl in the village, in several villages in fact. Her story explores her Zimbabwean roots and childhood in Wales. Repeatedly uprooted by the ambitions of her parents, her journey from school to school and home to home forces Ravu to develop strategies and coping mechanisms from a young age. Her short story takes readers on an intimate journey as Ravu discovers herself as an educator, embracing her purpose and taking pride in the knowledge she holds.

She cut all her hair off, and never used fake hair again. She told herself she must work 10 times harder than everybody around her to get to the same place and vowed to tell her children the same. She forced herself to awaken.

Joshua Donkor is a recent Cardiff Metropolitan school of Art and Design Illustration graduate. His work combines painting, transfers and recorded conversations with his sitters to investigate generational memories the Diasporic people he portraits. Donkor’s work breaks away from generalised and often stereotyped Western notions of Black Identity to explore personal identities and focus on individuals and their experiences and stories which have informed their personal sense of identity.

Welsh-Bajan and based in Cardiff, Nicole Ready is a recent Fashion Promotion graduate and the founder of Docks Magazine. Ready was inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 to create a zine exploring the impact and temporality of social media activism. For Ready, witnessing a focus on the experiences of Black people online was an overwhelming and moving experience. Ready has created the Black Square Magazine as a reflection on this emotionally challenged time, and an opportunity to ensure that the Black Lives Matter protests are recognised as a historical event beyond the 2 months the movement was trending on social media. For Black Square Magazine Ready has used Instagram as a creative tool. However, Ready’s work goes far beyond the performative temporality of #BlackOutTuesday and social media to recognise, reflect on and celebrate Black Lives Matter.

Onismo Muhlanga, is a Zimbabwean born creative and art curator based in Newport. Muhlanga’s deeply poetic visual language is informed by his own journey, and his interest for ritual and memory. Combining recorded video content with archival footage and found moving image, Muhlanga’s work combines music and movement to take viewers on a journey of spirit, heritage and embodied memories. Muhlanga’s holistic creative approach combines creative art media, poetic justice, visual representation and digital virtual performance. As a hybrid Zimbabwean-Welsh resident Muhlanga integrates heritage & cultural traditions to take a creative stance and shape the digital, physical, intellectual and emotional spaces he inhabits.

Sean Suter is a 19-year-old student of English Literature at the University of Manchester. Suter has always been encapsulated in Black culture, through his mother’s influence and his childhood growing up in Africa, Suters African heritage has been fundamental to his development and identity. The 2020 Black Lives Matter movement cemented this and sparked a deep passion within, motivating Suter to organise a peaceful protest in his local area of Port Talbot in 2020.

Through his poetry Suter shares a more intimate side; overcoming his reservations to share this extremely personal expression. Through the medium of art and creativity Suter hopes to inspire many others to express their own talents and really show off the beauty and wonder of what it means to be Black or have that heritage.

As a man of mixed cultures understanding and coming to grips with my identity has always been a struggle. At face value I am white, however I feel my roots with Black Culture are far more-deep rooted.

Sizwe Chitiyo is a rapper-singer-songwriter currently based in Cwmbran who goes by the name of SZWÉ as a professional musician. SZWÉ’s music expresses raw and unfiltered emotion through lyrics and rhythm, exploring diverse themes such as mental health, police brutality, Black sexuality and the politics around Black people.

For Days Ahead, SZWÉ has written and recorded a spoken word piece and a song that are available for download. Drawing on his own lived experience and the challenge’s faced by his community, SZWÉ hopes his words inspire and empower and help to change mindsets.

Temeka Davies’ love of people and their stories inspired this piece. From conversations with people of different ages, genders, religions, heritage about their Hybrid Identites, Davies created poscards that capture these stories.

Davies’ Hybrid Identity combines Nigerian and Welsh roots. Other identities she explored were born and raised in Tanzania for example, but came to Wales when they were 14 and have lived here since. Thus potentially spending more of their life in Wales yet their previous upbringing, skin, colour, etc contributes to their dual identity. For another it could be that they were born and raised in Wales, they have a Welsh accent and call Wales their home - but their first language was Somali and their home cooked food is Somalian cuisine.

There are endless amounts of experiences, thoughts, and feelings.

Davies decided to leave each postcard nameless, so the audience concentrate on nothing more than the spirit behind the words. She hopes to spark more understanding and compassion through this. This is a piece for everyone, any life, any being breathing and living today, and any one with a heart. The simplicity of this piece is to create space to stop, breathe, and simply listen.

Ismail

Yusuf Ismail is a Cardiff born and bred photographer with roots in Somaliland. Together with Shawqi Hasson, Ismail heads the creative collective Unify. After attending a Cardiff City match with a friend in 2019, Ismail was inspired to address representation in his local football club.

Ismail and Hasson shot My City My Shirt a series of portraits on film with subjects from a range of backgrounds wearing the Cardiff City shirt. The work was exhibited but Ismail felt inspired to create a larger and more permanent visual statement in the public space. Days Ahead project enabled him to work with Grangetown artist Bradley Rmer to create a giant mural in James Street, Cardiff.

Cafodd y gwaith ei arddangos, ond roedd Ismail yn teimlo'n ysbrydoledig i greu datganiad gweledol mwy, a mwy parhaol, yn y man cyhoeddus. Fe wnaeth y prosiect Dyddiau o’n Blaenau ei alluogi i weithio gyda’r artist Bradley Rmer o Butetown, i greu murlun enfawr yn James Street, Caerdydd.

Why is it that in a city that’s so diverse, so multicultural, and with football such a global sport – there’s not a single person of colour in the stands? We were trying to answer that question.

Days Ahead ni mradi uliomfanya Ismael kuweza kufanya kazi na msanii wa Grangetown aitwae Bradley Rmer kutengeneza mural kubwa katika mtaa wa James Street, Cardiff.

Kwa nini hilo liko katika mji ambao una watu wengi tofauti, na tamaduni tofauti, na mpira kama mchezo wa ulimwengu – kwa nini hakuna hata mtu mmoja wa rangi tofauti kwenye uwanja? Tulikuwa tunajaribu kujibu swali hilo.
